According to one popular belief, a clan's ancient tartan is the modern sett pattern manufactured with natural (non-alkaline) dyes. Natural Dyes are the mid-light shades which are supposed to represent the colors obtained in the past from natural materials. In reality, the shadings have no bearing on the age of the particular pattern which they describe and actually date from around 1950.
